Sport at RCSI

Sport is central to student life at RCSI. In fact not only do we have a new, state-of-the-art gym which is free for all of our students to use, we are also immensely proud of our 30+ active sports clubs, many of which represent RCSI at intercollegiate competitions and regional and national tournaments.

Sports bursary

No strangers to sporting achievement, whether in rugby, athletics or GAA, the University is committed to ensuring that all sporting pursuits among the student body are not only supported, but encouraged.

Part of this encouragement comes in the form of a sports bursary for sports people who excel in a variety of extracurricular sporting endeavours while completing their studies at RCSI. So whether you’re representing the University, your county or country, contact Student Services to learn more about how we can assist you on your sporting journey.

Supporting elite student athletes

We recognise that balancing academic studies and high-performance sport can be challenging. By promoting a supportive and flexible environment, RCSI aims to ensure that students can pursue ambitious sporting goals while continuing to succeed in their academic programmes.

This commitment reflects RCSI's dedication to supporting student-athletes in achieving excellence both on and off the field. Some of benefits we offer include:

  • A dedicated sports coordinator: Personalised support to help student-athletes thrive in both their sporting and academic pursuits.
  • Academic support and flexibility: Tailored academic support and flexible solutions, delivered in collaboration with University departments where possible, to help student-athletes balance their academic and sporting commitments while working within the requirements and regulations of their programme of study.
  • Funding opportunities: Support in accessing funding opportunities to help reduce the costs associated with training, competition, travel and equipment.
  • Career development: Access to workshops, mentoring, career guidance and well-being supports to help students thrive both academically and personally.

Community engagement

RCSI is committed to supporting our local community by making our facilities in Dublin city centre and in Dardistown in north county Dublin available to local schools, youth organisations and community groups at no cost. We collaborate closely with local sports clubs and community institutions, such Aungier Celtic soccer club and Na Fianna GAA, to offer sports facilities for the benefit of the community.

Through RCSI REACH and our student-led clubs and societies, we organise a range of sports activities for diverse groups, including schoolchildren, elderly residents, and youth. These initiatives are designed to promote physical health and provide an outlet, enhancing the overall well-being of the community.
